Advance Healthcare now offers nerve conduction and electromyography studies for patients with a suspected nerve injury or peripheral neurological condition. The results provide valuable clinical information that can help to confirm diagnoses and guide management. This is especially useful for patients who have not responded to conventional treatment and may benefit from a specific treatment approach or specialist referral to facilitate improvements in pain and function.
Symptoms that suggest a nerve conduction study may be indicated include pain, paraesthesia (tingling) or numbness in the upper or lower limbs in a peripheral nerve distribution. Nerve conduction studies should also be considered in the presence of an altered neurological examination that includes specific weakness in the limbs or reduced sensation.
A nerve conduction study can assist in diagnosing conditions including:
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Ulnar neuropathy
Cubital tunnel syndrome
Thoracic outlet syndrome
Complex regional pain syndrome
Cervical radiculopathy
Lumbosacral radiculopathy or plexopathy
Peripheral neuropathy
Myopathy
Other peripheral nerve conditions (eg diabetic neuropathy and multiple sclerosis)
A typical nerve conduction and electromyography study takes 15–30 minutes and measures electrical impulses in the affected limb using small surface electrodes. While some mild discomfort is common during the test, long-term side effects are rare and patients can resume normal activity after the test is completed.
Patients completing a nerve conduction study with our team can expect:
Rapid approval and a maximum timeline from referral to assessment of 4 weeks
A comprehensive nerve conduction and electromyography study with a Specialist Rehabilitation Physician clinical examination if required
Prompt communication with the referring doctor that includes examination findings and clinical interpretation of the collected neurophysiological data
Our team is now completing nerve conduction studies from our Clyde North, Dandenong and St Albans clinics.
There are no out of pocket costs for patients with a Worksafe, TAC or DVA claim. Nerve conduction studies are available to private patients with a gap fee payable.
