Exercise is a well-established treatment for musculoskeletal injury. Movement with exercise can improve muscle strength, joint health, physical conditioning and return to meaningful activity. With more severe or complex injuries, land-based exercise can sometimes be difficult. When exercising on land is challenging, hydrotherapy can be a safe and effective option to start rehabilitation.
Hydrotherapy is completed in a heated pool where the buoyancy provided by the water can reduce load on the injured area of the body. The warmth of the water can also facilitate muscle relaxation and provide pain relief, and allow for the safe commencement of a gentle exercise program. The exercise program can then be progressed over time and this can improve physical function and allow for the commencement of land-based exercise and activity. It is this transition to land-based exercise and activity that eventually leads to significant improvements in functional capabilities and long term improvements in pain.
Advance Healthcare provide hydrotherapy programs through multiple clinics across Melbourne. The programs are coordinated by our experienced physiotherapists with a special interest in hydrotherapy and chronic and complex injury. The hydrotherapy programs are typically completed over 6-10 weeks and patients attend weekly for physiotherapist supervised sessions to ensure effectiveness. Patients are also encouraged to attend for independent hydrotherapy sessions 3-4 times a week to derive maximum benefit.
Our hydrotherapy programs also include the following:
A comprehensive initial physiotherapy and hydrotherapy assessment
A tailored hydrotherapy exercise program that is monitored by a physiotherapist
Discounted entry to pool facilities for private patients and assistance with obtaining a pool membership for patients with an accepted TAC or Workcover claim where required
Support with transition to land-based exercise and activity
Our hydrotherapy program is available for both private patients and those with an accepted Workcover or TAC claim. Bulk billing is available for eligible patients referred on a Medicare Team Care Plan.
